For over a thousand years, Tibetan families have kept a treasure vase in the home.

Not on display. Not as decoration. Placed high, kept clean, and left undisturbed — a sealed vessel holding precious substances, prayers and offerings, quietly working on behalf of the household. The tradition traces to Padmasambhava, the master who brought Buddhism to Tibet in the 8th century, who gave precise instruction on how these vases were to be built, what was to be placed inside them, and how they were to be sealed.

In Tibetan they are called terbum (གཏེར་བུམ་), the treasure vase, or yangbum (གཡང་བུམ་), the vase of prosperity. In Chinese, 宝瓶. Many households simply call it the family's 聚宝盆.

They are traditionally kept for the increase of wealth and abundance, the removal of obstacles, harmony within the household, and long life. Tibetan teaching holds that material and spiritual wealth rise together, and that one supports the other.

Consecrated in Tibet

This vase was not blessed in a warehouse or a showroom.

It was filled and consecrated in Tibet by ordained monks, in a monastery hall, before  the Jowo Shakyamuni in Lhasa.

The Jowo Shakyamuni is the most revered Buddha image in Tibetan Buddhism. Tibetan tradition holds that it was made during the Buddha's own lifetime as his likeness and his proxy, brought into Tibet in the 7th century, and it is the reason Lhasa became the holy city. Pilgrims walk for months across the plateau to stand before it.

That is the presence in which your vase was sealed.

Made for one person only

Most wealth vases are made in batches and sit in a box until someone buys one.

This one begins after you order it.

You provide your date of birth and time of birth. Those details are carried to Tibet and enter the dedication as the vase is filled and consecrated on your behalf. The vase is then sealed — permanently — and sent to you.

It is not opened afterwards. Not by us, not by you. In Tibetan practice the seal is what holds everything the vase was given, and breaking it undoes the work. A treasure vase is meant to be received once, placed once, and left alone for the rest of its life.

一人一瓶。 One vase, one owner.

This means your vase cannot be returned, exchanged or resold, because it can never belong to anyone else. We'd rather say that plainly before you order than after.

The piece

Built in the traditional Tibetan silhouette — the full body, the short neck, the jewel at the crown that marks it as a treasure vase rather than an ordinary vessel.

The lotus pedestal. Gilt filigree petals, each set with alternating lapis-tone and coral-tone cabochons, on a beaded rim.

The body. Chased throughout with scrolling foliate work, and set with applied gilt medallions in arched niches depicting [[CONFIRM — what the medallions actually are. If they are the Eight Auspicious Symbols, say so and name them. If they are wealth deities, name them. If they are Shakyamuni Buddha figures, say so. This is the single most scrutinised detail on a piece like this.]]

The shoulder collar. Openwork gilt filigree, draped over the shoulder of the vase like a jewelled canopy, set throughout with lapis-tone and coral-tone stones.

The crown. A domed bell of gilt openwork, densely set in repeating rosettes, finished top and bottom with rope-twist borders.

The finial. A flame-shaped nimbus mounted with a triple jewel cluster — the norbu, the wish-fulfilling jewel. In Tibetan iconography this is what tells you the vessel below it is a treasure vase.

A note on materials. This piece is silver-plated over base metal with gilt detailing, set with lapis-tone and coral-tone stones. It is not solid silver and we won't describe it as such. The worth of a treasure vase in Tibetan tradition has never been in the metal — it is in what was placed inside, and in the hands that sealed it.

How to keep it

Treasure vases have their own etiquette, and it is simple.

Place it high and keep it clean. A home altar, a shrine shelf, a display cabinet, or a high clean spot in the living room, study or office.

Do not handle it with bare hands. Use a cloth. Traditionally the vase sits in a case or on a dedicated shelf and is not picked up at all.

Never break the seal. Not to look inside, not to add anything, not ever.

Keep it away from bathrooms, kitchens, bedrooms, and the floor.

You may dust around it freely, on any day. There is no auspicious-day restriction on keeping its surroundings clean.

Nothing else is required of you. No daily ritual, no offerings, no recharging. It was consecrated once, for you, and that holds.

Questions

Do I need to know my exact birth time? As precise as you can manage. Your birth certificate is the most reliable source. If you genuinely don't know it, contact us before ordering and we'll advise.

What if I put in the wrong birth details? Contact us immediately. Once the details have gone to Tibet, they cannot be changed.

Can I buy this as a gift? Yes, but you'll need the recipient's birth date and time, and the vase will belong to them permanently. It cannot be transferred to someone else afterwards.

Do I have to be Buddhist? No. The tradition is Tibetan Buddhist and we present it as such. Respect for the object is what matters.

What's inside it? Sacred substances prepared and placed by the monks according to tradition. The vase is sealed and is not opened, so we're not able to show you the contents.

Can I open it just to see? No. Once opened, a treasure vase is no longer a treasure vase.

Will this make me rich? No, and be cautious of anyone who tells you otherwise. This is a devotional object with over a thousand years of tradition behind it, traditionally kept for abundance, harmony and the removal of obstacles. We can tell you exactly where it was consecrated and exactly what was done. We can't promise you an outcome.
