THE BONE MOON JOURNAL · 2027

Most resolutions die by February. 7 reasons to wear yours instead.多数新年愿望,撑不过二月。七个理由,把它戴在身上。

Between now and 6 February you get two new years: 1 January, then Chinese New Year. Here is the case for marking 2027 with one small carving instead of a list.

Most resolutions die by February. 7 reasons to wear yours instead.
The Hunter's Fang on a steel plinth. An image from the Bone Moon world.

Every year it is the same list. Save more. Ask for the promotion. Stop saying yes to the wrong people. By the second week of February, the list is in a notes app nobody opens.

The problem is not the goal. It is that a decision made once, on one night, has nothing to remind you of it on an ordinary Tuesday in March.

That is the thinking behind 月牙 Bone Moon, three hand-carved pieces from Hoseiki. Each one answers a single question: what are you carrying into 2027? Here are seven reasons to choose one.

1

It turns one decision into something you see every day一个决定,天天看得见

It turns one decision into something you see every day

A resolution lives in your head. A pendant lives on your chest. You see it when you dress, feel it when you lean over the desk, touch it before the call you have been putting off.

That is all a talisman has ever been: a decision made visible. Bone Moon asks you to choose one word for your year, Win, Keep or See, and wear it.

Win: for the year you stop waiting for the right time争得到:2027,不再等时机

Win: for the year you stop waiting for the right time

Some people farm. Some people hunt. The closer on commission, the manager going for the next title, the founder who eats what they hunt.

The Hunter's Fang 龙门猎牙 is carved from the tip of a mammoth tusk into a dragon breaking free. It carries the oldest career story in Chinese: 鲤鱼跃龙门. Most carp stay in the river. The one that leaps the Dragon Gate becomes a dragon. Nobody is born one. You jump.

Salary people count days. Commission people count deals.

For 2,000 years, China called these dragon teeth千百年来,中国人叫它龙齿

For 2,000 years, China called these dragon teeth

Long before anyone knew what a mammoth was, giant teeth dug from the earth were recorded in Chinese texts as 龍齒, dragon teeth. In 1899 the scholar Wang Yirong found the earliest Chinese writing scratched into so-called dragon bones.

So a dragon carved from a mammoth tusk is not a stretch. It is the material finally being called by its old name. Mammoths have been extinct for thousands of years; the tusk comes from the Siberian permafrost, and no living animal is involved.

Keep: for the year nothing gets taken from you

Revenue up, savings flat. A client who never pays on time. A rumour of another round of cuts. For a lot of people, 2027 is less about getting more and more about holding on to what they built.

Mahakala, Keeper of What You've Built 大黑天·守业尊, is the guardian of the rice bowl 饭碗. About 1,300 years ago the monk Yijing recorded that monasteries kept an image of Mahakala at the kitchen pillar, so no one went without food. Today the rice bowl is your job, your shop, your commissions. He still keeps watch, as a reminder to guard them.

He is traditionally believed to act fast相传,他出手最快

He is traditionally believed to act fast

Gentle deities bless slowly. Wrathful protectors are traditionally believed to clear obstacles quickly and forcefully. That is why people turn to Mahakala when they cannot afford to wait for things to get better on their own.

And the fierce face is not what it seems. In Tibetan tradition he is regarded as the fierce form of Guanyin. Bodhisattvas lower their eyes; guardians glare. The anger faces what threatens you, never you. You do the kindness. He does the fierce.

See: for the year you are not fooled看得清:2027,看清楚再走

See: for the year you are not fooled

Everyone has a deal for you. An investment that cannot lose, a partner who says all the right things, a contract with small print on page nine.

佛 simply means the awakened one. When a traveller asked the Buddha whether he was a god, a spirit or a man, he said no to each, and answered that he was awake. The Awakened One 拨云见日·觉者 shows a face rising where the clouds part. It is a reminder to look twice: before you sign, before you invest, before you trust.

Do not accept a thing because of rumour, tradition or a teacher's authority. See for yourself.

By next Chinese New Year, it will show you kept it到明年新春,包浆会替你作证

By next Chinese New Year, it will show you kept it

Mammoth tusk is a living material in one way: worn against skin, it begins to warm and deepen into a patina, 包浆. Wear it through 2027 and by next Chinese New Year the piece will look different from the day it arrived.

That is the closest thing to a scoreboard a resolution has ever had. Each piece is hand-carved and one of one. Nobody else is carrying your year.

The three were carved to work as a sequence. The Fang goes out and wins it. Mahakala keeps what was won. The Awakened One sees the next threat coming before it lands. Most years ask for all three.

Is it from elephants?

No. It is mammoth tusk from the Siberian permafrost. Mammoths have been extinct for thousands of years, so no living animal is harmed.

Do I need to be Buddhist to wear these?

No. Many people wear them as a daily reminder of what they are going after this year. Please wear them with respect.

Mahakala looks fierce. Is it bad luck?

No. In Tibetan tradition he is regarded as the fierce form of Guanyin, and the fierceness faces what threatens you, not you.

Can I shower or swim with it?

We advise against it. Water and sudden temperature changes can cause natural material to crack.
