Gold, jade, citrine or mammoth tusk? What to wear for luck and protection in 2027
The Hunter's Fang on a linen crescent. Studio illustration.

Before every new year, the same question comes up at family dinners and in office pantries. What should I wear this year? Gold? Jade? A citrine? Something from the temple?

There is no wrong answer here. Each of these traditions has been worn by people who believe in it for generations, and Hoseiki carries several of them. This page is not about which is better. It is about which one fits what you need from 2027.

We compared the five things people most often buy for luck and protection with the new 月牙 Bone Moon collection, carved from mammoth tusk. Five questions: where the material comes from, how specific its meaning is, how easy it is to wear daily, whether it changes with you, and what it costs.

Now the detail behind each row.

1. Where the material comes from, and how old it is一、材料的来历与年岁

Gold carries the longest story of value in Chinese culture. It is what grandparents gave and what families keep. Jade has an even older place: the Chinese have revered it for thousands of years as the stone of the gentleman. Crystals such as citrine are newer to most Singaporean homes, and quality and treatment vary a great deal.

Bone Moon's material has its own deep root. Each piece is carved from mammoth tusk recovered from the Siberian permafrost. Mammoths have been extinct for thousands of years, so no living animal is involved.

For around two thousand years, China called giant teeth dug from the earth 龍齒, dragon teeth. They are listed in the 本草纲目. Few materials have a longer story in Chinese tradition, which is why The Hunter's Fang is carved as a dragon from the very tip of the tusk.

2. How specific the meaning is二、寓意够不够具体

Most luck pieces cover a lot of ground. A gold pendant or a citrine stands for prosperity in general. A Pixiu is believed to bring wealth in and keep it from leaving. A temple amulet protects as it was blessed to.

That breadth suits many people. Others find that a piece meant for everything ends up meaning nothing in particular on a Tuesday morning.

Bone Moon takes the opposite approach. One piece, one job. Win it. Keep it. See it coming. 争得到,守得住,看得清。

I. Win, The Hunter's Fang. For going after it: the sale, the next role, the bigger number. Built on 鲤鱼跃龙门, the carp that leaps the gate becomes a dragon.

II. Keep, Mahakala. For guarding your rice bowl, 守住你的饭碗. The Tang monk Yijing recorded Mahakala at monastery kitchen pillars 1,300 years ago so monks never went without food. In Tibetan tradition he is the fierce form of Guanyin, and wrathful protectors are traditionally believed to act fast.

III. See, The Awakened One. For seeing clearly before you sign, invest or trust. Buddha means the one who is awake. In the Kalama Sutta he taught people to see for themselves rather than believe on rumour or authority.

You know what yours is for. That makes it easier to use as a reminder: you touch it before the call, the meeting, the signature.

3. Daily wearability and size三、日常好不好戴

A thick gold chain is beautiful, but some people find it too visible for the office. A jade bangle is lovely and can chip against a desk. Crystals and Pixiu bracelets are light and comfortable, though wrist pieces knock against laptops all day.

Bone Moon pieces are pendants on an adjustable cord, sized to disappear under a shirt or sit over it.

PieceSizeAbout the size of
The Hunter's Fang7 cmA little longer than your thumb
Mahakala2.6 cmYour thumb's top joint
The Awakened One5.4 cm with gold-tone claspA matchbox

One honest caveat: mammoth tusk is a natural material. Take it off to shower or swim, as water and sudden temperature changes can cause cracking. Gold and jade are more forgiving here.

4. A patina that becomes yours四、包浆,只属于你

Gold looks the same on day one and day one thousand. Most crystals do too. Jade is the classic exception: there is an old saying that people nourish jade, 人养玉, and a worn piece is traditionally said to gain a soft lustre.

Mammoth tusk shares that quality. It arrives pale. Worn against the skin, it begins to warm toward honey and gold, a patina called 包浆. No two pieces age the same way, because no two wearers do.

Wear it into 2027 and, by next Chinese New Year, it begins to carry a record of the year you wore it. The year you went for it. The year nothing got taken. The year you looked twice.

5. Price五、价格

Gold is priced by weight and the day's gold rate, so a substantial pendant can cost well above a carved piece. Good jade ranges from modest to extraordinary. Crystals and Pixiu bracelets are usually the most accessible. Temple amulets are often offered by donation.

Bone Moon sits in the middle. The Hunter's Fang and Mahakala are S$288 each. The Awakened One, a larger relief carving with a gold-tone clasp, is S$388. Every piece is hand-carved and checked by hand before it ships, with a 30-day right-fit exchange and lifetime free servicing.

So which should you choose?那么,该选哪一个?

If you want a store of value to pass down, choose gold. If you want the gentle, lifelong companion your family has always worn, choose jade. If you want something light and affordable to start with, a crystal or Pixiu bracelet is a fine choice. If you want the blessing of a particular temple, go to that temple.

If you want one piece for one specific job this year, small enough to wear every day, from a material China has named after the dragon for two thousand years, and that changes with you, that is what Bone Moon was made for.
