The 4 zodiac signs that clash with the 2027 Fire Goat, and what tradition says to carry
Mahakala, Keeper of What You've Built. Hand-carved mammoth tusk.

Every Chinese New Year, someone in the family asks the same question over the reunion dinner: are you clashing this year?

Some people laugh it off. Most of us quietly check anyway. Because if 2026 was the year the company restructured, the client vanished or the investment went sideways, you start to wonder whether the calendar had something to do with it.

This is a plain-language guide to 2027 as the tradition reads it. Who meets Tai Sui, what each relation is said to mean, and what people have carried into difficult years for centuries.

First, what is a 丁未 Fire Goat year?什么是丁未年?

The Chinese calendar names each year with two characters. The first is a Heavenly Stem, the second an Earthly Branch. 2027 is 丁未: 丁 is yin Fire, 未 is the Goat.

Yin Fire is traditionally described as candlelight rather than a bonfire. Quiet, persistent, easy to underestimate. The Goat branch is earth that holds heat. Put together, many practitioners read 丁未 as a warm, slow-burning year where pressure builds gradually rather than all at once.

The year does not start on 1 January. In the traditional reckoning it turns on 6 February 2027, Chinese New Year, and for birth charts the cut-off is Li Chun 立春, the start of spring, which falls around 4 February. If you were born in January or early February, your sign may be the one before. Check your exact date.

Tai Sui, in plain terms太岁是什么

Tai Sui 太岁 is the name tradition gives to the year's ruling general. Each year a different general takes the seat, tied to that year's animal.

The idea is simple. Some signs sit comfortably with the year's general. Others sit across from him, beside him, or at an awkward angle. Those awkward angles are what people mean by 犯太岁, offending Tai Sui.

It is not a prediction that something bad will happen. It is a traditional warning that the year may push against you more than usual, so you move with more care and protect what matters.

SignRelationBorn (recent years)What it traditionally means
Goat 羊值太岁 Own year1967, 1979, 1991, 2003Your sign sits in the general's seat. Tradition reads it as a year of change and exposure: new roles, new pressures, more eyes on you.
Ox 牛冲太岁 Clash1961, 1973, 1985, 1997Directly opposite the Goat. Often read as the strongest of the four: upheaval, sudden moves, career and business shake-ups.
Rat 鼠害太岁 Harm1960, 1972, 1984, 1996A quieter friction. Tradition links it to 小人, people working against you behind the scenes, and misunderstandings that cost you.
Dog 狗破太岁 Break1958, 1970, 1982, 1994Associated with things breaking: plans, deals, partnerships, savings that leak out faster than they come in.

Birth years follow the Li Chun cut-off around 4 February. Someone born on 20 January 1985, for example, is traditionally counted as a Rat, not an Ox. Different schools weigh these relations differently; this table follows the common reading.

Look at the column on the right and notice what it has in common. Almost every traditional warning is about losing ground. A role shaken. A deal broken. Someone taking what is yours. Money walking out the door.

That is why, in clash years, tradition leans toward protectors rather than luck charms.

For the clash signs: a guardian who does not wait犯太岁:请一位出手快的护法

Buddhist tradition has peaceful deities and wrathful ones. The wrathful protectors are believed to step in quickly and forcefully, which is why people in a hard year tend to ask for them by name.

Mahakala 大黑天 is the best known of them. In Tibetan tradition he is the fierce form of Guanyin: the same compassion, turned urgent. Fierce toward whatever threatens you, never toward you.

Bodhisattvas lower their eyes. Guardians glare.

菩萨低眉,金刚怒目, a traditional Chinese saying

He has a second, older job. Around 1,300 years ago the monk Yijing 义净 recorded that monasteries kept an image of Mahakala at the kitchen pillar, so the monks would never go without food. He guarded the rice. In Chinese we still call a livelihood a rice bowl, 饭碗.

For an Ox facing a clash, a Rat with someone working against them, a Dog watching plans break, that is the whole point. Not more luck. Keeping what you have already built.

For a volatile year: see it coming多变之年:先看清

There is a second problem with clash years that protection alone does not solve. When things are unsettled, people make fast decisions. They sign the contract, take the offer, trust the friend with the sure thing. Then the bill arrives.

A traveller once asked the Buddha whether he was a god, a spirit or a man. He said no to each. He said he was awake. That is all the word Buddha means: the awakened one, 觉者.

Do not go by rumour, nor by authority. See for yourself.

Kalama Sutta, AN 3.65, paraphrased

The Awakened One is carved as a face in profile, eyes lowered, rising where the clouds part. 拨云见日. It is a reminder to look twice before you sign, before you invest, before you trust.

The good news: three signs the year favours2027年的三个顺势生肖

Not everyone is clashing. Tradition says three signs sit in harmony with the Goat this year.

SignHarmonyBorn (recent years)
Rabbit 兔三合 Three Harmony1963, 1975, 1987, 1999
Pig 猪三合 Three Harmony1959, 1971, 1983, 1995
Horse 马六合 Six Harmony1966, 1978, 1990, 2002

For these signs, the traditional advice is the opposite of the clash signs. Do not hold back. If the year is with you, this is the year to push: the promotion you keep postponing, the bigger client, the business you keep saying you will start.

For that, there is the Fang. For 2,000 years, China called the giant teeth dug from the earth 龍齒, dragon teeth. This one is the tip of a mammoth tusk, hand-carved into a dragon breaking free.

In legend, the carp that clears the Dragon Gate becomes a dragon. A harmony year is the one where the current runs your way.

Why mammoth tusk, and why it matters that you wear it为什么是猛犸牙

All three pieces are hand-carved from mammoth tusk recovered from the Siberian permafrost. Mammoths have been extinct for thousands of years, so no living animal is involved.

The material does something no metal does. Worn against the skin, it slowly develops a warm patina, 包浆. Wear it into 2027, and by next Chinese New Year it should have begun to warm in tone. A visible record that you carried your year.

If your family has more than one clash一家人,不止一个犯太岁

It is common. A Dog father, an Ox daughter, a Goat husband. Many families buy a guardian for the clash signs and a Fang for the one the year favours, then give them as the year turns.

I was born in January. Which sign am I?

Traditionally, signs change at Li Chun, around 4 February, not on 1 January. If you were born before Li Chun, you count as the previous year's animal. The reading above uses your full birthday.

Is Mahakala too fierce to wear?

In Tibetan tradition he is Guanyin in her fiercest form. The fierceness is pointed at what threatens you, not at the wearer.

Will this stop bad things happening?

No object can promise that. These pieces carry traditional symbolism and serve as a daily reminder of your intention for the year.

Is it from elephants?

No. It is mammoth tusk from the permafrost. Mammoths have been extinct for thousands of years.

Tai Sui relations, zodiac readings and the meanings of each piece are presented as Chinese and Buddhist tradition and symbolism, not as guaranteed outcomes. Different practitioners may read a chart differently. Images are illustrations of the Bone Moon world.
