What Is Moonstone?

The Moonstone stone is a pearly white member of the Orthoclase family, also known as Hecatolite. Orthoclase stones are a hard, crystalline mineral made up of Sodium, Potassium, Aluminum and Silicate.

These atoms are all tightly woven together in a very specific pattern. Resulting in a stone that is incredibly dense yet features a distinct semi-translucent sheen not seen anywhere else.

In recent years, as monochromatic tones became more popular in fashion, so did Moonstone crystals. The name Moonstone often conjures up images of pale, ethereal rays of moonlight, perfectly befitting of this pearly white gemstone.

How Is Moonstone Formed?

Natural Moonstone gemstones can be quite hard to find. They are very rare but form in the same way that Orthoclase stones are, given that they’re of the same family. Orthoclase stones are generally colorless and are a class of Silicate Ore.

As Orthoclase crystals are generally colorless, they can frequently be tinted by impurities and producing an array of different stunning colours. Green, pink, yellow and even greyish white are some of the possible Orthoclase colours that can be formed.

When exposed to Sodium ions, Orthoclase crystals will turn into a stunning shade of pearlescent white, turning it into what we know as Moonstone.
