What Is Aquamarine?

The Aquamarine stone is the light blue member of the Beryl family. Beryl is a hard, crystalline mineral made up of Beryllium, Aluminum and Cyclosilicate.

These atoms are all linked together by a very specific pattern. It manifests in a number of different colour spectrums. Some of which, you should be familiar with such as Emerald. The pale blue of which, falls under the category of Aquamarine.

How Is Aquamarine Formed?

Natural Aquamarine stones can be quite hard to find. They are very rare but form in the same way that Beryl stones are, given that they’re of the same family. Beryl crystals are generally colorless and are an ore of Beryllium.

As Beryl crystals are generally colorless, they can frequently be tinted by impurities and producing an array of different stunning colours. Green, blue, yellow and red are some of the possible Beryl colours that can be formed. 

When exposed to Iron 2+ ions, Beryl crystals will turn into a stunning shade of teal, turning it into what we know as Aquamarine.
