Every year during the seventh lunar month, the same advice circulates: don't swim, don't stay out late, don't hang laundry after dark. And if you're staying in a hotel, there's a long list of room practices to observe.
But there's a question that comes before all of that, and it rarely gets answered: should you be travelling at all this month?
That depends on your sign, and this year the answer is sharper than usual. Ghost Month 2026 runs from 13 August to 10 September, peaking on Ghost Day, 27 August. The seventh lunar month is always 申月, the Monkey month, and 申 happens to be the travel star for three of the twelve signs. For those three, the urge to move is genuinely activated in the exact month tradition tells everyone to stay close to home.
Below is what each of the twelve signs should consider before booking anything.
Ghost Month 2026: The Dates That Matter
13 August 2026 — the first day of the seventh lunar month, when the gates are traditionally said to open.
26 to 28 August 2026 — the peak. Ghost Day (中元节) falls on the 27th, and the days either side are considered part of the most active window. If your travel dates are movable, move them out of this range.
10 September 2026 — the final day. The seventh lunar month has 29 days this year, so there is no 30th.
Understanding the 驿马 Travel Star
Chinese astrology has a specific marker for movement. It is called 驿马, the post horse, and it governs journeys, relocation, and the restlessness that tends to come before both.
Every sign belongs to one of four groups, and each group's travel star sits in a fixed branch with a fixed compass direction. That direction is traditionally considered your smoothest heading, the way movement tends to flow most easily for you.
Monkey, Rat and Dragon — travel star 寅, direction Northeast.
Tiger, Horse and Dog — travel star 申, direction Southwest.
Snake, Rooster and Ox — travel star 亥, direction Northwest.
Pig, Rabbit and Goat — travel star 巳, direction Southeast.
Here is why this matters right now. The seventh lunar month is 申月, the Monkey month, and 申 is the travel star for the Tiger, Horse and Dog group. For those three signs, the pull to travel is activated this month. For everyone else, this month is neutral, and travel goes broadly as well as you plan it.
One More Layer: The Tai Sui in 2026
2026 is 丙午, a Fire Horse year, and four signs hold a difficult position against the year's Tai Sui (太岁), the Grand Duke. This is known as 犯太岁, offending the Tai Sui, and it applies to the Horse, Rat, Ox and Rabbit.
It doesn't predict disaster. What it traditionally signals is instability, a year in which things tend to move when you would rather they didn't. Ghost Month is the yin-heaviest stretch of that year, which is why these four signs are advised to take more care than usual right now.
Rather than treating any of this as a rule you must obey, consider it a lens. For some signs it will confirm what you already sensed about the timing. For others it simply means travelling with a little more margin than you normally would.
鼠 Rat — Postpone If You Can
Travel star: Northeast (寅). Position in 2026: 冲太岁, clashing the year directly.
A clash year already generates movement you didn't ask for. Adding voluntary travel during the yin-heaviest month stacks two kinds of instability on top of each other. The classic clash-year travel problem isn't danger, it's disruption: cancelled legs, plans that change after they're confirmed, and a trip that ends up costing considerably more than budgeted.
If you must travel: keep it short, keep it domestic, and pay for the flexible fare. Northeast is your smoothest heading if the destination is yours to choose, and avoid committing to anything you cannot move.
牛 Ox — Travel, But Not in a Group
Travel star: Northwest (亥). Position in 2026: 害太岁, harm.
害 tends to work through people rather than events. On the road, that reads as the companion who changes the plan after everything is booked, the friend who never settles their share, or the colleague whose delay quietly becomes your delay. Solo and two-person trips are generally fine. Large group travel is where this actually bites.
If you go: book and pay for your own legs separately, and don't be the one fronting the group booking this month.
虎 Tiger — You'll Want to Go. Go Carefully.
Travel star: Southwest (申), activated this month. Also note: 寅申冲, your branch clashes the month.
申月 lights your travel star, so the restlessness you're feeling is real. But 申 also clashes your own branch, and this combination has a name: 驿马逢冲, the whipped horse. Movement is intensified to the point where it becomes difficult to steer. In practical terms, expect the trip to change shape after you've booked it.
If you go: overbuild every buffer. Two hours between connections rather than forty minutes, and nothing important scheduled for the day you land.
兔 Rabbit — Go, But Check Everything Twice
Travel star: Southeast (巳). Position in 2026: 破太岁, break.
破 erodes rather than shatters. In travel, that shows up as small things quietly coming apart: the booking that never actually confirmed, the passport page nobody checked, the connection that was always slightly too tight. Nothing dramatic, but all of it irritating, and nearly all of it avoidable.
If you go: re-verify everything forty-eight hours before departure. Passport expiry, visa status, seat assignment, transfers, insurance. Of all twelve signs, this is the one for whom a checklist genuinely earns its keep.
龙 Dragon — Clear to Travel
Travel star: Northeast (寅). Position in 2026: no Tai Sui conflict.
Nothing structural works against you this month, so travel goes broadly as well as you plan it. Dragon's real risk is the blended trip: you'll try to make it half work and half holiday, and end up doing neither properly.

蛇 Snake — Clear, But Protect Your Rest
Travel star: Northwest (亥). Position in 2026: no Tai Sui conflict.
You're clear to travel, but Snake tends to be the sign most affected by unfamiliar rooms during a yin-heavy month. The issue isn't danger, it's sleep. A new environment combined with the seventh month is a reliable recipe for light sleep and three-in-the-morning waking, and poor rest is what actually ruins a trip.
If you go: choose the quieter hotel over the better located one. A mid-floor room away from the lift, and leave a small light on overnight.
马 Horse — The One Sign That Should Stay Put
Travel star: Southwest (申), activated this month. Position in 2026: 值太岁, your own year, with 午午自刑.
This is the sharpest conflict among the twelve, and it's worth stating plainly. 申月 lights your travel star, so you will feel the pull to book something. But this is also your 本命年, with 午午自刑 layered on top, and Ghost Month is its lowest stretch. The urge to move and the advice to stay still are both at their maximum at the same time, and in a self-punishment year, the traditional reading is that the impulse itself is the problem.
If you must travel: wear red, and limit yourself to necessary journeys only. Don't extend the trip, don't add a leg, and book your return before you leave.
羊 Goat — The Safest Traveller This Month
Travel star: Southeast (巳). Position in 2026: 合太岁, combining with the year.
午未合 places you in the most harmonious position of 2026, and nothing this month cuts against it. Travel is well supported, and companions generally have a smoother experience when you're the one organising.
If you go: you should be the one holding the group booking. Southeast is your smoothest heading.
猴 Monkey — Clear, But You're Conspicuous
Travel star: Northeast (寅). Also note: the seventh lunar month is 申月, your own month.
You sit at the centre of this month's energy, which traditionally means high visibility and very little margin for carelessness. The Monkey travel failure is almost never the big thing. It's the passport left at check-in, the alarm that didn't go off, the phone in the back of the taxi.
If you go: travel light, one bag, and keep everything valuable on your person rather than in checked luggage.
鸡 Rooster — Clear to Travel
Travel star: Northwest (亥). Position in 2026: no Tai Sui conflict.
No structural conflict this month. Rooster's travel risk is friction rather than fortune: the queue, the gate agent, the hotel that lost your booking. You will very likely be right about all of it, and being right will not get you upgraded.
If you go: let the small things go. The energy you'd spend winning the argument is worth considerably more spent on the trip itself.
狗 Dog — The Best-Supported Traveller of the Twelve
Travel star: Southwest (申), activated this month. Position in 2026: 三合, in the Fire trine with the year.
Of all twelve signs, this is the one whose Ghost Month travel is genuinely well placed. You sit in the Fire trine with the year, you carry no Tai Sui conflict, and 申月 activates your travel star cleanly with no clash attached. The same activation that troubles the Tiger arrives here unencumbered.
If you go: head southwest if the choice is yours, and consider taking the trip you've been deferring. This particular combination doesn't come around often.
猪 Pig — Clear on Land, Mind the Water
Travel star: Southeast (巳). Position in 2026: no Tai Sui conflict.
You're clear to travel on land. But Pig is 亥, water, and Ghost Month's long-standing caution against swimming, boats and open water is held most firmly for your sign. Of all the seventh-month taboos, this is the one tradition applies to you with extra weight.
If you go: skip the island hop, the night swim and the boat transfer. Land-based itineraries are entirely fine.
Four Practices That Apply to Every Sign
Whatever your verdict above, these hold for the whole month.
Avoid flying between 26 and 28 August. Ghost Day falls on the 27th, and the days either side are considered part of the peak. If the dates can be moved, move them.
Arrive before dark. Reaching an unfamiliar place after nightfall is the single most consistently repeated Ghost Month travel caution. Where there's a choice, take the earlier flight.
Stay out of open water. This is the oldest and most widely observed of all seventh-month taboos, and the one with the most obvious practical logic behind it.
Tell someone your itinerary. Folk practice frames this as not travelling unaccompanied in spirit. It is also, quite simply, good sense.

Ghost Month travel carries two exposures, and most people only think about the first.
There is you, moving through unfamiliar places, making decisions quickly in environments you don't know well. A Note on How to Read All This
Ghost Month is not really about fear. It is a month the calendar sets aside for care, for your ancestors, for your home, and for your own judgement.
Zodiac years follow the lunar calendar, so if you were born in January or early February, your sign may in fact be the previous year's. The 驿马 placements described here are calculated from the year branch alone, and a full BaZi chart may place your travel star differently.
